Through our partnership with SUNY Broome Community College, our MLT Pathway Program allows full-time employees of partners within the UVM Health Network to continue earning full-time wages and benefits while studying to complete their Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree as a Clinical Laboratory Technician.

What does a Medical Laboratory Technician do?

Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLT), also commonly known as Clinical Lab Technicians (CLT) are responsible for performing tests and analysis on blood, urine, spinal fluid and tissue. They are responsible for operating, maintaining and troubleshooting sophisticated biomedical instrumentation and technology. Laboratory testing includes disciplines in chemistry, hematology, immunology, immunohematology (transfusion medicine), microbiology, molecular biology, anatomic pathology and cytopathology.

Eligibility Requirements:

All candidates must:

  • Currently work at least 72 scheduled hours per pay period at a partner site within the UVM Health Network (part-time/per diem employees are not eligible).
  • Be in good standing with no corrective actions above a counseling level.
  • Have earned or obtain a high school diploma or GED by July 1.

  • Meet the pre-requisite requirements to apply for the SUNY Broome CLT Program, including successful completion of a biology and a chemistry course (with labs), as well as a math class (inclusive of algebra and trigonometry).

Program Details

Offered in partnership with SUNY Broome, the MLT Pathway Program offers a comprehensive curriculum that includes didactic and laboratory learning via distance education, as well as hands-on clinical rotations within the UVM Health Network. While enrolled in the program, participants will work reduced hours in their current positions at UVM Health Network partner sites.

Upon completing SUNY Broome’s Associate of Applied Science program, graduates will be eligible to sit for the exam to obtain certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) and licensure as a Clinical Laboratory Technician (CLT) through New York State. Graduates can seek employment as an MLT at one of our health care partner sites across Vermont and northern New York.

Participation requires full-time commitment across four semesters at SUNY Broome. All classes will be virtual. Clinical practicum hours will take place in laboratory settings at participants’ UVMHN employer sites.

Program Costs and Commitments

Students are responsible for paying all tuition and fees. For graduates who commit to working at their respective UVMHN partner for three years, UVMHN will begin reimbursing tuition costs one year after graduation.

Participants must commit to working as a full-time Medical Laboratory Technician at a partner site within the UVM Health Network for three years upon successful completion of the program.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does the next cohort start?

Program participants will begin their studies through SUNY Broome in the spring of 2024.

How many work hours are required during the program?

While enrolled in the CLT Program at SUNY Broome, participants will work 48 hours per pay period in their current positions at UVM Health Network partner sites.

Participants will receive pay for an additional 12 hours per week (24 hours per pay period) to allow time for classwork, lab/clinical instruction and study time.

How does tuition reimbursement work?

Students are responsible for paying all tuition and fees. For graduates who commit to working at their respective UVMHN partner for three years, UVMHN will begin reimbursing tuition costs one year after graduation.

What if I’m a per diem or part-time employee? Am I eligible?

In order to be eligible, you must be a full-time employee of a partner within the UVM Health Network.

I’ve taken pre-requisites in the past. Do I need to retake those courses?

Possibly. SUNY Broome will review the courses and grades on your transcript to determine whether they meet the requirements for this program.

I’m interested in participating but I haven’t taken the pre-requisites classes? Can I still participate?

Starting in the spring of 2024, the UVM Health Network will offer the option for employees to begin pre-requisite work through the Health Studies Program at SUNY Broome. Individuals who successfully finish these prerequisites can apply to join the MLT Pathway Program cohort in starting in the spring of 2025.
