JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Nursing Director for Emergency and Medical Intensive Care is accountable for fiscal, operational, and administrative leadership for the areas within their specific leadership scope.  This leader will work with the CNO and other nurse leaders to assure that the appropriate human, fiscal and material resources are available to provide optimal patient care delivery and meet department and strategic goals.  At the direction of the CNO, this leader will provide key communications to staff and stakeholders on nursing activities within the division of nursing.

Key accountability areas include:  Direct supervision of the nurse manager and nurse educators within the Emergency Department and the Medical ICU.  This leader provides strategic and operational direction for evidenced base workforce planning and patient care.  This leader has accountability to work in partnerships with staff, patients and families within UVMMC.  The Nursing Director will work with stakeholders at UVMMC/ UVMHN and Nursing Professional Governance to advance the strategic priorities of nursing and the organization. 

In alignment with the UVMMC Leadership Core Competencies, the Nursing Director will create a high performance culture, coach and develop others, demonstrate a commitment to care and service, be skilled at navigating and leading change, demonstrate innovation and ingenuity, and develop and maintain trusting relations. This leader will demonstrate a high level of emotional intelligence as evidenced by strength in each of the previous outlined areas.  The Director is accountable for the ongoing development of all staff within his/her specified areas/units and directly accountable for development of staff in leadership roles.  They provide leadership for improving patient care, planning, staff performance, systems improvements, and professional development.  The Director participates in the setting and implementation of the UVMHN, UVMMC and Department of Nursing’s goals, priorities, and strategies and works with other disciplines and groups to provide the highest quality of care across the system.   

EDUCATION:

Master’s Degree (MSN, MHA or MBA) is preferred.

BSN is required.

EXPERIENCE:

Minimum of Five (5) years of experience as a Director required.

Experience in integrated health systems in an academic medical center preferred.

Experience at the director level in healthcare setting within nursing preferred.
