What is a Clinical Assistant (CA)? CA’s are an integral part of hands-on patient care. Working under the direction and supervision of a RN, they have the ability to take and record vital signs, perform designated tests and collecting patient samples, and supporting patients in all activities of daily living. CA’s meet patients and their families as they enter the unit, welcoming and acclimating them to the unit. CA’s interact with unit staff, physicians, and other hospital department personnel. It is critical that CA’s provide timely and accurate communication, accurate documentation and maintain a harmonious, team oriented, customer friendly environment. CAs must be able to function competently in a computerized medical setting.

Course Details:

  • 6-week full time status equivalent commitment. The Student will not be compensated for any absent days.
  • 40 hours per week including every other weekend. 80 hours of class room time and 160 hours of “Hands on Learning” (Clinical Rotations).
  • Week 1-2 Classroom Clinical Assistant Basics at CVPH with exam, and PMCS (Preventing and Managing Crisis Situations) Training.
  • Week 3 – 6 Clinical Rotations with hands on training experience. Demonstration and written type final exam.
  • Must demonstrate competency of all components of current CA competencies and criteria. Must have attended all class room sessions and may not have been absent in excess of 1 day not related to hospitalization, COVID + diagnosis, or death of immediate family member during entire 6-week program.


Upon Completion of Course: Students will have opportunity to “bid” into any vacant CA position in the Med/Surg Tower (R3- R7). Upon acceptance, Students as new employees will be eligible for any sign on bonuses where applicable

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Previous experience in customer service and people skills preferred.
  • As applicable, the individual has training/competency in attending to the special needs and/or behaviors appropriate to the age of patients for which care is being provided.
